Break it or take it apart?!
Today I had 12 kids from 4th and 5th grades learning the distinction between taking a computer apart and breaking it...
I am fortunate to have the opportunity to work with kids and to be able to expose them to things they never did before. The excitement and the desire to learn something new is inspiring and contagious. By the end of the session I wanted to keep on working on that project.
After our leadership skill part in today's session I brought 3 laptops and 1 desktop to the room. We talked about how we will take them apart and made sure that they know that we are NOT going to BREAK them. All the computers are in working conditions.
Without explanations I gave them screwdrivers and wished them good luck! They all were excited and got straight into it. They found ways to share the tools, they decided how to keep track of the screws and where they belonged, they were patient and worked together- it was inspiring to see !
They are not by any means "computer technicians" now, but they are a bit more comfortable when it comes to hold a screwdriver and to try to solve problems on their own. We kept talking about SELF EFFICACY and at the end , at our "feedback circle" they said it out loud without me asking them -
"I am not afraid to try to solve a problem I have never seen before"
That ,to me, was enough!
